This is the LAST matchup of the regular season. You might be fighting for that last playoff spot, or maybe you’re fighting for a bye week in the first round of the playoffs. Either way, you might be able to find some help on the waiver wire. As always, the best resource for waiver wire advice is your own league’s available players.
Before getting into the rankings, I must address two players: Adam Sandler and Andrea Riseborough. Adam Sandler got a surprise nomination at the SAG Awards, but he has barely registered anywhere else. This definitely boosts his stock for an Oscar nomination, but even an Oscar nomination seems far-fetched. If you know you’re gonna be in the playoffs and have a weak actor, then go ahead and pull the trigger. Just don’t count on it.
Same with Andrea Riseborough, minus the SAG nomination. A handful of actors and actresses are campaigning on her behalf, but she barely registered anywhere else heretofore. If you’re desperate, pull the trigger, but the Best Actress race is crowded, and I would be very surprised if she got an Oscar nomination, no matter how well-deserved.
- Argentina, 1985 (INT) – Call it World Cup bias (which isn’t even a thing), but the biggest surprise at the Golden Globes was Argentina 1985 winning Best International Feature. That all but guarantees its inclusion on Oscar nominations Tuesday, so put in the waiver request now, especially if you have RRR or Good Night Oppy on your team.
- Hong Chau (ACTRS) – Another somewhat surprising SAG nomination, Hong Chau is picking up some momentum. She might find herself with a BAFTA nomination in this matchup.
- Georgia Oakley (DIR-SCRN) – The writer-director of Blue Jean is included here only because you’re chasing points at the BAFTA nominations.
- Close (INT)
- Forgotten Songwriters – Because it’s very common for multiple songwriters to collaborate on original songs, make sure you’re not missing out on any points if their collaborators are owned by other teams.
- Any VFX Oscar Shortlist – The Visual Effects Society announces their nomination, so if you need to chase some points, look at the Oscar Shortlist for VFX.
- Anyone that got nominated for a guild award – Several guilds announced their nominations, and they are the principal voters for the technical categories at the Oscars. There is significant overlap between some guild nominees and the eventual Oscar nominees. Plan ahead and snag them now. I didn’t include sound here, but those are also worth a look.
