The Gotham Awards are unpredictable and quirky, which is exactly why it’s a perfect way to kickoff the regular season at Red Carpet Rosters. Although, it was expected that films like Tár and Everything Everywhere All at Once would be well represented, other films like Aftersun and We’re All Going to the World’s Fair pulled multiple nominations.
Let’s dive into the nominations. People who drafted Daniels (Dan Kwan or Daniel Scheinert) might be sweating their first round pick because although Everything Everywhere All at Once was well represented, Daniels left without any points for screenplay. Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu were also snubbed, putting their stock as a late round sleeper pick in jeopardy. It’s way too early to panic on Daniels, Curtis, and Hsu right now, but this is a situation worth monitoring.
Also worth monitoring is the Women Talking snub for best feature. In many circles, this film was as high as the second favorite behind The Fabelmans, the clearcut early favorite. It will certainly get lots of nominations at each of the other awards, but missing at the Gothams may indicate that wins at those awards may be hard to come by. Again, way too early to overreact (especially because Sarah Polley got a nom), but it’d be worth having a backup plan in place if you’re a Women Talking PIC owner.
The Gotham Awards are also tempting for waiver wire picks, but many players getting points for the Gotham Awards nominations won’t go on to be consistent points contributors for your team. You have an advantage of waiting though, because waiver requests won’t get processed until the Gotham Awards announce their winners. (Remember waiver requests are processed on the day before each matchup.) Even so, there are some names here that are intriguing that might be worth watching. Let’s take a look at nominees that could offer value in future matchups, ranked in order of future value. (NOTE: These players largely went undrafted in Red Carpet Rosters leagues.)
Waiver Wire Candidates
- Aftersun PIC (Getting a lot of critical buzz out of the film festival circuit)
- Charlotte Wells (Solid breakthrough candidate for points)
- Hong Chau (A name that has popped up recently buzzing for an Oscar nom, meaning she can make the rounds at critics organizations for points)
- Elegance Bratton (See Charlotte Wells)
- Lena Dunham (See Charlotte Wells, and even though she didn’t get a breakthrough director nomination, she got a screenplay nomination, which only helps her stock)
- Nina Hoss (could ride Cate Blanchett’s coattails to some supporting noms)
- Kogonada (Kogonada pops up from time to time as a fringe fantasy player)
- Paul Mescal (If Aftersun is here, the lead actor has to be as well. Frankie Corio could also get some youth/breakthrough nominations, but tread carefully)
- Taylor Russell (She’s a perennial plug and play)
- Gabrielle Union (Union can offer value matchups that feature African American centric awards, plus her performance is underrated in a wide-open Supporting Actress field)
- Aubrey Plaza (The critics seem to like her)
- Mark Rylance (Always a popular name if he’s in anything)
While everything else that got a Gotham Nom may make a splash, we need more ceremonies to make that determination. For example, Dos estaciones was a multiple nominee, but Mexico selecting Bardo as the official submission for Best International Feature at the Academy Awards really hurts Dos estaciones’s stock everywhere else. I’m not jumping on the waiver wire for that just yet.
Drop Candidates
None. WAY too early to make that call.
